Uses
Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion Hydrochloride) is prescribed for treating depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). In some cases, patients have used it to treat anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other related conditions. The active ingredient in this medicine has even been used to help people quit smoking. This drug works by acting in the brain, to restore the natural equilibrium of neurotransmitters (natural chemicals which can have an effect on the mood).

This drug has also been the subject of much medical research, and many studies have been conducted, to explore other potential benefits. This research focused on whether or not it is suitable or effective at helping with weight loss, sexual dysfunction, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis and other conditions. However, doctors generally only prescribe it for treating depression.

Dosage and Administration
Patients need to consult their doctor, for a thorough medical assessment, before treatment with Wellbutrin (Bupropion Hydrochloride) can begin. This medicine comes in the form of 150mg tablets, which are taken by mouth. You will need to strictly follow the dosage instructions that your doctor gives you. Patients who are treating seasonal affective disorder are sometimes told to start taking it in autumn, with treatment continuing through the winter. They may then have their dosage gradually reduced in early spring, after which treatment is stopped altogether. All patients should note that treatment with this drug should not be abruptly discontinued, as this may cause withdrawal symptoms. The prescribing doctor may reduce the dosage over a set period of time, before stopping treatment.

Side effects
Treatment with Wellbutrin (Bupropion Hydrochloride) may result in side effects, including:

• Dry mouth
• Weight loss
• A loss of libido
• Uncontrolled shaking
• Perspiring excessively

If you experience any side effects, tell your doctor. Severe reactions may occur in a small number of patients. You must immediately seek medical attention if you notice blisters, a burning sensation in the eyes, fever, hallucinations, seizures or any other signs of a serious reaction.

Precautions
A small number of patients who take antidepressant medication may experience a worsening of depression or suicidal thoughts. Discuss the risks of treatment with your doctor before taking this medicine.

Patients who suddenly cease use of sedatives or alcohol (if they have been using these substances regularly) may be at an increased risk of seizures. For this reason, doctors generally do not prescribe this medicine for patients in this category.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Wellbutrin (Bupropion Hydrochloride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
